...solid writing, superb musicianship, and a great sound...highly recommended.
Jazz Review

Following up on his 2005 release "Minor Changes," the NY-based trumpeter travels to Los Angeles to again team up with saxophonist and long-time collaborator David Sills for a set of forward-looking originals, firmly grounded in the sounds of the sixties jazz mainstream. Joining Sillery are LA-based veterans Larry Koonse on guitar, Joe Bagg on organ and Tim Pleasant on drums, all members of Sills' working quartet. "... immediately gratifying - both familiar and vibrantly fresh." FoJazz

Reviews of On The Fly

All About Jazz (Dan McClenaghan)
Liam Sillery invited David Sills to join him on his excellent debut from last year, Minor Changes (OA2). This time out, on his second set as a leader, the New York-based trumpeter/flugelhornist hooks up with the Los Angeles-based player's working quartet: Sills (tenor sax), Joe Bagg (organ), Larry Koonse (guitar) and Tim Pleasant (drums). The two ...

Audiophile Audition (Jeff Krow)
Liam Sillery, the New York-based young trumpeter, is back with his second OA2 release, and has hit paydirt with On the Fly. For those of you who mourn for a modern version of the classic Blue Note sound, you no longer have to search out pricey Criss Cross label imports, the one label that has tried to put out Blue Note quality CDs with young jazz a ...

Jazz Review (Thomas R. Erdmann )
New Jersey native Liam Sillery began playing the trumpet while young, following his uncle in this endeavor. Collegiate studies started at the University of South Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree. Upon graduation he moved back to the New York City area where he freelanced for 10 years before entering The Manhattan School of Musi ...

All About Jazz (Jim Santella)
It's fitting that trumpeter Liam Sillery chose to close this program with Lee Morgan's "Ceora," since the parallels drawn between the two stand out so distinctly. He steers this New York/Los Angeles quintet through his crisp and clean sophomore recording project with all elements in place. Swing, groove, cohesiveness, technical mastery and improvis ...

JazzTimes, March 2007 (Forrest Dylan Bryant)
Liam Sillery and David Sills are birds of a feather. Both channel a hardbop vibe that pays tribute to an earlier time without sounding like a throwback, and each contributes four sunny tunes to this appealing disc. Working mostly in medium tempos and slow burns, Sillery's plainspoken trumpet and Sills' friendly tenor sax engage in happy banter, w ...

Cadence, Oct-Dec 2007 (Larry Hollis)
A well known organist by the name of Joe Bagg is heard to great advantage on "On The Fly," a new issue from East Coast trumpeter Liam Sillery. This is his second recording following a solid debut in "Minor Changes" for the same label with tenor man David Sills on board but an entirely different rhythm section. That time out the only non-original wa ...
